Indie Author’s Guidebook: Don’t Forget the Sandwich Board

Indie Authors who have signed up to participate in local markets, farmers’ markets, craft fairs, or other outdoor events, should consider investing in a sandwich board. These handy pieces of signage are eye-catching, and they announced your presence to all passersby.

While there are lists of essentials indie authors need to pack before heading out to do a book signing or other event, the sandwich board might be one of the best investments a person can make. Sure, sure, authors need to have plenty of their own books. And, indubitably, they should show up at their events armed with goodies to share. But, if you’ve only got a little money to spend and you want to be sure to snag the attention of customers and readers, the sandwich board might be the best option. Here’s why:

1.      Placement: A sandwich board is placed in front of the booth. While retractable banners are lovely and table runners are practical, the sandwich board is the first thing a person will see as they stroll through the fair.

2.      Versatile: You can write pretty much anything on your board. Want to introduce yourself? Feel like running a sale? Wish people would stop and talk to you about your newest release? If you buy the right sandwich board,  like the one I use, you should be able to wipe away the chalk marker easily and create new slogans as you please.

3.      Cost Effective: A good quality sandwich board is only about half the price of a retractable banner, and it will likely last just as long.

4.      Durability: If you’ve ever walked around a local market, you already know that sometimes banners, runners, and table displays fall over or tip sideways. This can create a headache for the vendor. Sandwich boards don’t have those same issues. Unless someone bumps into them hard, your sandwich board will be up and announcing your business proudly all night.
